youbc

Youbc is the University of British Columbia's site for prospective students. While the primary goal of this redesign was to update the visual design, there was a significant amount of content that needed to be restructured in order to better allow users to find information about the school. I worked on the information architecture for youbc under contract for Idea Rebel, who did the visual design and CMS integration.

Process

UBC provided us with recent user research including usability tests, focus groups, and comparative analysis, and I analyzed these sources to identify the core usability concerns for the site. Based on this analysis, I restructured parts of the content to provide clearer paths for students to find information about the university. To support the content structure, I designed clearer calls to action and improved the navigation system used throughout the site.

Result

Shortly after the site went live, UBC sent us this email they received from a student who had used the newly designed youbc site.

“I just wanted to say that the ubc website is gorgeously designed. I've gone to many university websites and this is definitely the best of the lot. Beyond just aesthetics, the information is very well organized. Usually it takes forever to find course listings -- this is the most important information for a prospective student, but for some reason it's always difficult to find, and even then it's usually in annoying PDF, but I found UBC's immediately. Good job :-)”
